Hi Dave, thanks for your story! There actually did used to be a whorehouse above the Smokehouse. It was called the Old Court Rooms, and there is a picture of it from 1913 on display at the Barnard-Stockbridge Photography Museum in Wallace right now. I'll try to send it to the email you signed in with...

I happed to stumble across this and am thrilled! My grandpa owned the Smoke House in Wallace and lived upstairs what used to be a bank, court house, and then my Grandparents home. It was a great place to visit when I was a kid. The truckers would sometimes mistake my grandparents place as a whore house because it was upstairs. I remember my grandma chased them off with a broom! Exciting for a kid to see! My Dad delivered groceries to the ladies when he was in high school and he had some pretty cool stories about that. I heard the story that the whore houses bought band uniforms for the High School and bought the police a new police car. My uncle Buck would visit from Missoula and frequent the “butt hut” as he would call it. He was a very good friend of Delores Arnold. I’ve got a lot of stories about the place but probably inappropriate to say them here.
Thanks again for your great article!

Hi Katie, I'm happy you reached out! I LOVE archival work. It's so interesting, like you get to time travel and create stories around fragments like a mystery or detective case. It's like reading a good book, but hands-on with real life! People like to say that all the knowledge in the world is on the web and in our phones but it's absolutely untrue, especially when it comes to people whose important contributions have been overlooked for one reason or another... :) Anyway, glad you're getting those students in there digging around...

Hi Heather,
I spotted The Spokesman article and decided to check out your work here. The research sounded interesting, and your name seemed familiar. I think we were English undergrads at UI at about the same time, and I think we had a class or two together.
Anyway, wonderful project! I really enjoyed reading about this history of the Silver Valley. My husband is a Harrison native, and I've heard bits and pieces of the history from his family.
I teach a 200-level research class at WSU, and we spend some time in the archives. I hope to share your work here to show them the value of archival and primary research work.
Thanks!

My mother's mother, Ione Husser, cooked for Delores Arnold in the early 50's. Delores gave my grandmother a little pomeranian. My dad, Henry Hussa, did carpenter work for Delores in the early 50's and said they joked around a lot. Delores bought cookies from my mom and would send my sister and me money for Christmas. I have some pictures of Delores that are better than the ones I saw on this site. She was a beautiful woman---slim and with dark hair and eyes and dressed in pretty dresses and high heels. I graduated in 1995 from WHS so I can remember seeing some of the girls in the grocery store or during the Elks parade they would stand on the roof of the Oasis rooms to watch. I'm excited to read your other entries here too. Finding a blog by a fellow Wallace person made my day too :)
